European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOF 2017) was hosted by Erzurum one of the important winter sports center for the 13th time. Almost 700 athletes from 34 different countries participated in the festival. Athletes aging between from 14 to 18 competed in 9 different sports throughout the festival.

Alpine Skiing

Slalom, Giant Slalom, Parallel Mixed team competitions continued five day long in Palandöken Avea Slope and in that competitions Italy and Russia run for the gold medal. Alex Vinatzer won two gold medal, in addition Italy won two silver medals and became the winner of the sports.

Italy had its name written in the first place after the competitions of both technique and speed competitions and took 2 gold 2 silver medals, Russia took the second place. Slovenia ended the festival with 1 silver and 1 bronze medals in individual and team competitions and took the third place.


Kandilli Nordic Ski Center hosted biathlon 7.5km and 6km in both girls’ and boys’ category for 5 days.

The country which collected the most medals in number was Russia with 15 medals in total but France took the first place. France overcome Russia which won 2 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze, with 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. Czech Republic was the third in the competition with Vitezslav Horinig’ 1 gold medal in 7,5 km competition.

Ski Jumping:

Slovenian athlete Timi Zajc kept his place at the peak in the sports of ski jumping which is one of the most exciting discipline in winter sports.

Slovenian athlete gives promise about his future with the jumpings at K90 hill of Kiremitliktepe Ski Jumping Hills at EYOF 2017. He broke the record of Turkey’s only ski jumping hill with the meters of 117.5.

16yr old Slovenian athlete Timi Zajc kept his first place during the competitions. Slovenia completed the event with 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals and France was the second with 1 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze. Russia took the third place with 2 bronze medals.

Representative of Turkey, Muhammet Ali Bedir lost the chance to see the podium by neck and took the fourth place. Muhammed Ali collected 116.2 points in the first jumping of his with 96 meters and jumped 89 meters in the final round and collected 213.5 points in total.

Cross Country Skiing

Russia is one of the most successful countries in winter sports. The success is not gained by chance in cross country skiing one of the sports which had the longest history in winter sports. Russia won 5 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals in cross country skiing and outdistanced their rivals.

Finland won 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze in total and took 7 medals in total. Slovenia won 1 medal and took the third place.


Palandöken Mountain hosted exciting snowboard competitions throughout the week. France and Russia were two of the most successful countries in snowboard. Les Bleus won three golds as Russia got the first place two times.

Aydan Karakulak won bronze in Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom and this was the Turkey’s first Winter EYOF medal.


Russia won both golds in curling. Russian boys’ curling team beat Norway in the final and won the gold medal. Girls’ curling team beat the host country in the final.

Ice Hockey

Russia dominated the ice hockey at EYOF 2017 Erzurum. They won the final game against Belarus and got the gold medal. Slovakia went back home with the bronze.

Figure Skating

Russian Alina Zagitova won both golds in Figure Skating free programme and short programme. Another Russian Petr Gummenik won the both free and short programme golds in boys’ side.

Short Track

Russia won 7 of the 21 available medals in Short Track. Vera Rasskazova of Russia won 500, 1000, 1500 metre races in girls’s side. Salvijus Ramanauskas of Lithuania won boys’ 500 metres race as Diane Sellier of France won the in 1000 metres.

Turkey won its first ever EYOF medal in short track with Hazar Karagöl. Karagöl finished the 1000 metres final in second place.
